5 ways to keep seniors mentally stimulated

Mental health, especially when it comes to senior citizens, is often downplayed in our society. It is essential to understand the importance of mental health in elders.

In an article published by the World Health Organization (WHO), it was disclosed that approximately 15-20% of adults over the age of 60 suffer from mental illness. Some of the most common Mental Health disorders in senior citizens are:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Dementia

  • Bipolar disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Addiction

Mental health has an impact on physical health and vice versa. 

Here are some things you can do to keep mental health stimulated in elders.

Going back on our previous point of mental and physical health working hand-in-hand, it is important to stay physically active. Exercising can help you stay lively and retain strength in your muscles. If exercising daily is a big task, the very least you can do is talk small walks.

3. Communicate with people about what you feel

It is crucial to overcome the stigma built around mental health. If you are a senior or caring for one, it is important to ponder over psychological health through open communication. Conveying what you feel could be the first step towards a healthier mental state.

4. Make healthier changes to your lifestyle

Healthier changes aren’t just limited by diet and exercise. They can be as small as altering the sleeping cycle. You can begin with maintaining a daily routine and save your body from any surprises.

5. Stay involved and active

Seniors living by themselves should make this their priority. Isolation can lead to loneliness and poor mental health. Staying involved by being part of group-related activities that you enjoy keeps the mental state vibrant and joyful.
