On Sunday, 11th April 2021, Maharashtra became the first state to administer more than one crore dose of vaccine to fight against Covid-19, which took the state less than 70days. “Maharashtra state administered 10,038,421 doses, which is highest in the country so far,” Dr. Pradeep Vyas, the Principal Secretary of Maharashtra’s Health Department, said.

Mumbai has been in the number one position in Maharashtra in providing the vaccine jabs. As of Sunday morning, 16,32,937 people have received the COVID-19 vaccine in Mumbai, followed by people in Pune and Thane, which has been administered to 13,85,156 people and 7,28,498 people, respectively. Around 90 lakh beneficiaries out of the one crore have been given the first dose, and 10 lakh have been fully vaccinated, with both doses.

On 16th January 2021, this vaccination drive began across the country and is currently underway for frontline and health care workers and people of age 45 years and above.  According to the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh are also close in on the 1 crore mark.

For COVID-19 vaccination, the Maharashtra Government has worked out a target of 40 lakh people per week, which is around 1.6 crore per month. But it is facing a shortage of vaccines, and more than 30% of vaccination centers have run out of stock. Maharashtra aims to vaccinate 6 lakh people per day, and for that, it requires 40 lakh doses each week.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the vaccination festival, ‘Tika Utsav’ must be celebrated from April 11th-14th to speed up the ongoing vaccination drive and this ‘Tika Utsav’ marks the start of second big war against COVID-19.  On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted a message on Twitter to mark this ‘Tika Utsav’. PM Narendra Modi said Each One- Vaccinate One means help those who are less educated or elderly, who cannot go and get vaccinated themselves; Each One- Treat One means help those who do know about facilities available for vaccination; Each One- Save One emphasis is one wearing a mask. And in the fourth request, PM Modi said that in the case of COVID-19 positive people from that family and locality must create a micro-containment zone. To prevent the third wave of COVID-19 in the near future, we need to follow all the safety precautions and people from all age groups should get vaccinated as soon as possible.
