When most of us are plagued by illness for the last five to eight years of our lives.125-year-old Yoga guru Swami Sivananda, who walked bare feet inside the Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan recently to receive the Padma Shri award from President Ram Nath Kovind, had the energy and stamina of someone who is decades younger.

So, what’s the cause of aging and the key to reversing it?

According to David Sinclair, Ph.D., Harvard professor of genetics, author of the runaway bestseller Lifespan: Why We Age, and Why We Don’t Have To. Sinclair in his podcast says there are a host of science-backed lifestyle changes people can make to live longer. “If you want 14 extra years right off the bat, simply do what many doctors recommend: eat less, exercise regularly that includes yoga, stay away from cigarettes, and get enough sleep.”

David Sinclair recommends eating plant-based foods, which are great for your body and some contain polyphenols, which are molecules that plants make when they’re stressed. Eating “stressed food” actually activates those longevity genes. Research over the past thirty years has shown that the practice of yoga and meditation, and a clean diet and lifestyle, can greatly reduce the fraying of telomeres, the part of our DNA that is related to aging.

Calorie restriction is the best “therapy” against aging. And Swami Sivananda is the biggest example of what Dr. David Sinclair recommends. The yoga luminary practices ‘simple living’ in the truest sense of the term. Swami Sivananda has always said he eats very simple food that is oil-free and without spices. “I lead a simple and disciplined life. I eat very simply — only boiled food without oil or spices, rice and boiled daal (lentil stew) with a couple of green chilies,” he had been quoted several times.

According to Swami Sivananda, “Do not overload the stomach. Fill it halfway with solid foods and a quarter with liquids. One quarter should remain empty for the natural development of gases.”

Just like Sivananda, Dr. David Sinclair to believe that constant snacking is not the best way to prolong life expectancy. “I’m big on intermittent fasting and restricting calories, and I think people should not snack-it’s much better to have your three meals a day,” says Dr. Sinclair in his podcast. He also advocates skipping breakfast. “When you intermittent fast, you can reduce insulin levels by 40 percent, and that helps improve health in many different ways.”

So, does that mean, eating one meal a day helps you live longer? David in his podcast says, “Overconsumption, or just consumption in general, makes your body complacent, and we know this in great detail at the molecular level. Some genes respond to how much you’re eating and what you’re eating, and whether you’re exercising, and these are called longevity genes, and they give our body resilience.”

Dr. David is not alone in his calorie-restricted theory. “300 fewer calories each day can make a tremendous difference in your life.” After all caloric restriction (or drugs and regimens that mimic caloric restriction) has almost a century of research behind it.

Research done on humans indicates that calorie-restricted diets can slow down the aging process and increase longevity. A study published in Cell Metabolism journal says that cutting calorie intake by 15 percent over two years can slow aging and protect against diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.
